Cheer and Football Coaches,
I hope all of you are enjoying the offseason. I wanted to remind everyone that now is the best time to get your volunteer background check forms in. The earlier these get in the quicker they come back.
Also, this is great time to do some reviews of old plays, cheers, and last years notes. It is never to early to prepare for the season.
WWSB News 7 Reports:
PALMETTO – It was four years ago that Palmetto Little Leaguers lost their fields when a new elementary school was built. Now more bad news, after environmental testing has revealed trace elements of pesticide residue where new Little League fields were set to be built. Now the county and the city of Palmetto say they just don’t have the money to commit to rehabbing the property. “It seems like we’ve just been spinning our wheels for four years and finally just got completely stuck in the mud today,” said North River American Little League president Derek Goforth. He says today’s news that there won’t be any new baseball fields built puts he and his players back at square one. “This news today I feel its going to affect our credibility as a board with our parents and I do think its going to greatly reduce our numbers for seasons to come,” said Goforth. The league has been working for four years to get new fields built that comply with Little League regulations. Back in January Goforth thought it was a done deal, but now things have changed after the city and county say they don’t have the $3.3 million needed to free the Blackstone Park site of residual pesticide residue. “This was one of the few options that we had that there was enough land to build a suitable park here,” said Goforth. Palmetto city officials say they’re working to find a solution. “We’re not giving up, we’re continuing to move forward,” said Palmetto Mayor Shirley Groover Bryant, “my city clerk and myself are going to be meeting with the county administrator tomorrow afternoon and we’re going to formulate a game plan to move forward.” But after having lost more than one hundred players during the past four years, Goforth says a fix is needed fast; even though he’s not sure everyone is truly on board. “I feel the city’s wholly on board, I feel its something they definitely want to see take place,” said Goforth, “honestly I feel the county [thinks] this is a project that whether it happens or not its not of great concern to them.” Blackstone Park does have baseball fields already, but they don’t meet Little League regulations, which prevents the Palmetto teams from hosting major events. Goforth says one last option would be to convert those fields into Little League fields, but he admits that would prevent adult teams from playing there.
There is an investigation open to find out if players listed addresses on their records that were not accurate. If they are found guilty they may be asked to forfeit their state championship.
